The Rubicon was a small river separating ancient Italy from Gaul. Fearing Caesar’s growing power in Gaul, Pompey and the senate ordered Caesar to return to Rome without his army. When, in defiance, Caesar crossed the Rubicon with his army in 49BC, he passed beyond the limits of his province and ‘the die was cast’. He became an invader of Italy and precipitated civil war. Hence, ‘to cross the Rubicon’ is to take an irrevocable step. Every communications decision puts a company, industry or brand’s reputation on the line. Management, marketing and brand teams alike need the right advice when they cross their own Rubicon. This way they can put clear blue water between themselves and the competition.
